A Day in the Life of a Trader's Employee
Ok I know bad title. I couldn't think of anything else. Well as much as John may hate me for this I figured I would give my side of the trader world story.
Normally I wake up around 6:30am roll out of bed after my husband rips off the covers, turns on the light and tells me its 6:30 and time to get up. I shower and get ready.
I then go wake up my 2 ½ year old daughter only to find that she is not happy to see me that early in the morning. I sit her in front of the T.V. with her stuffed bear names Blue and breakfast so I can get the rest of my stuff together. (Thank God for DVR's, Mickey Mouse, and Backyardigans are accessible 24/7)
I finish getting dressed pick out my daughter's clothes, wrestle her to put her clothes on, brush teeth, comb hair, etc, etc. My husband has prepared her lunch I grab it and we are out the door usually by about 7:30. I race her to school all the way across town, drop her off and head all the way back across town to get into work by around 8:20. Thank you Lisa for getting to work on time I couldn't do it without you. Now my day finally starts.
Depending on the day I usually check email and answer phones during the morning. This particular morning however I realized I forgot my sister's luggage that she wanted to borrow for her and John's Hawaii trip. I let John know and ask if it is ok to go get it otherwise she will have a cow. He agrees and also asks if I can watch James (my nephew/godson) so they can finish getting their stuff together. Of course I agree. John hands me James with a dirty pajama shirt on and no pants just a pamper, I figure I am just running back home so no big deal he will just be in the car seat. I strap him in and head home.
I get home and grab the luggage. After I have left my house, John calls and asks if I can stop by the store and pick up a cassette for his video camera because he is running low and needs some for the trip. I again agree, and wonder why I ever gave him my cell phone number. I had already taken off and realized James is a mess so I pull a U-ey and put some of my daughter's decent looking clean pajamas on him because that is all that fits and looks semi-boyish. (no shoes, no socks) On my way to the store my sister Maria calls and asks if I can stop by Target and pick up some travel sized baby body wash for James. I figure I can kill two birds with one stone so I stopped at Target.
Unfortunately John's camera is too nice for Target stock and they do not have the correct cassettes. I lug James around grab the baby wash and head to Best Buy down the street. To my dismay it is closed, Best Buy doesn't open till 10 and it is barely 9:15. Their car was coming at 11 so there was no time to wait for it to open. I try one last stop at the Office Max and still no luck. So cassette-less I head back to work.
I get back to work, give James a bath and get him ready for the trip. I keep him entertained while they finish up packing. Ten o'clock rolls around and still no car. The car company forgot to pick them up, so here I come to the rescue and drive them to the airport. I help pack them up and drive away. Finally we reach the airport and drop them off. By this time it is noon and time for lunch since I haven't eaten all morning I decide to treat myself to my favorite Chipotle Fajita Bowl. I bring lunch back for Lisa and myself. We eat and get back to work.
If that wasn't hectic enough I later read the list of things to do that John and Maria left. Pick up dry cleaning, drop off at baby store, bring in trash cans, check mail daily, water plants, watch out for painter, etc. Those are just the daily house chores that I get to help with since I am the one here everyday, not to mention the actual "business stuff" that needs to be kept up with. I shrug my shoulders give a big sigh and get to work.
Maybe some other time I will tell you about my deadline schedules. Like the time they gave me a day to make and put up a website with no prior notice. Or the time they gave me an hour long project at 4:45pm on a Friday that was due before I left work at 5pm.
I guess I can't complain too much, it pays well, and I work with people I can get along with. (Everyone except Hubert that is) It's an interesting job, definitely keeps you on your toes and irate 95% of the time, but I have learned a lot along the way. Not trading wise as many of you may think I don't have the patience to learn from John and he doesn't have the patience to teach me so I will pick up what I can along the way.
If you ever need a an office manager, business manager, website manager, life manager, baby sitter, personal assistant, or anything else, let me know I apparently have learned to work well under pressure and multi-task.
